Association of Licensed Architects (ALA) Announces Winners in 22nd Annual Design Award Competition

Gold Award Winner: Woven House, Pukwana Beach, WI -- Bruns Architecture

A family chapel in rural Iowa, a global financial firm headquarters, a Colorado mountain home and a boutique hotel near Chicago's historic Wrigley Field are among the projects winning top honors at the Association of Licensed Architects (ALA) 22nd Annual Design Awards, which recognized projects for design achievement.
A total of 23 awards were presented in commercial, institutional, residential, multi-family, religious, interior and unbuilt categories.

The highest honor, the Don Erickson Presidential Award, went to Ullem Chapel in Moravia, IA. The project, a private family chapel, was designed by Brent Schipper of ASK Studio, Des Moines, Iowa. The project also received a Gold Award in the Religious category.

“The design of Ullem Chapel is a painstakingly simple solution, which any architect knows, is anything but simple to achieve,” said Jeff Budgell, President of the Association of Licensed Architects on presenting the Presidential Award. “Our judges, when awarding the Gold, praised it as an innovative reinterpretation of the rural church,” he added.

Gold Award winners also included: 4000 Ingersoll, Des Moines, IA designed by ASK Studio, Des Moines, IA;  Akuna Capital, Chicago, IL, by Earles Architects and Associates, Chicago; Hotel Zachary, Chicago, IL, by Stantec Architecture, Chicago and Mountain Modern, Aspen, CO by Robbins Architecture, Winnetka, IL and Woven House, Pukwana Beach, WI by Bruns Architecture.

“This year's projects were truly standouts,” said Joanne Sullivan, ALA Executive Director. “Our judges praised Presidential and Gold Award winning projects, in particular, for qualities such as attention to detail and well-thought-out, creative design solutions.”

Architects, contractors, owners/developers and guests attended the January 14 virtual presentation; emcee was Anthony Costello, FAIA, Irving Distinguished Professor at Ball State University.

ALA 2020 Design Awards entries were evaluated by a panel of judges, including Karl Griffith, ALA, Principal, BCA Architect & Engineers, Mike Groth, ALA, AIA, NCARB, Managing Partner, Groth Design Group, Mark L. Hansen, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, Principal, Mohegan Hansen Architectural Group, Dwayne MacEwen, AIA, NCARB, Principal, DMAC Architecture and Belinda O'Kelly, ALA, AIA, LEED AP, Principal, O'Kelly Kasprak.
