Indiana - 2018 IRC Code Update: Wall Bracing and Energy Code Changes

The new 2020 Indiana Residential Code will take effect on Thursday, December 26, 2019.
Matt Brown, a specialist with APA -The Engineered Wood Association, will review changes to the 2018 International Residential Code (IRC) with Indiana amendments relating to wall construction, design and the energy code provisions. This interactive presentation will dig into the changes and offer solutions to common issues that may arise.
Matt will demonstrate building performance from wind events common to our region and what can happen when code details are overlooked. There will be an overview of the wall bracing requirements of the IRC, including APA’s Wall Bracing Calculator and the simplified method. The significant changes to the energy code will be reviewed including changes to the HVAC and mechanical code provisions.
Attendees will leave with an understanding of:
- Changes to the IRC for wood wall design and construction
- Commonly overlooked details of wall design and construction
- Introduce APA’s Wall bracing calculator for homes designed to the IRC.
- Introduce APA’s Simplified Wall Bracing Methiod.
- Understand the four pathways for complying with the Energy code and mandatory provisions.
Matt has been involved in energy codes for over 17 years, including state and national adoption process. He has taught energy codes to builders, engineers, architects and code officials in a format that is complete and easy to understand, making him known as the “go to” energy code person.
