Keynote Address - "Days of Miracle and Wonder"
Approved for 1.25 LU/HSW
8:30-9:45 AM CDT, Thursday, May 18, 2023
Speaker: Peter Birkholz, AIA, LEED AP, Principal and President, Page & Turnbull
Description:
Page & Turnbull is celebrating its 50th year in business and the architecture firm, which focuses on historic preservation, reimagining existing buildings, and celebrating communities, continues to embrace, as Paul Simon sings, “days of wonder and miracles.”
A lot has changed since 1973 – we have gone from long distance to Teams, Earth Day to climate change, urban renewal to vacant downtowns, civil rights to Black Lives Matter, and now…AI. Still, architecture remains optimistic.
Through the lens of the firm's projects, Peter Birkholz will address how the profession has become more collaborative, continues tackling critical issues, and remains intent on creating better places and better communities.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the financial incentives available for historic projects, including historic preservation tax credits and other tax credits, and how they can be applied to projects.
- Identify how sustainability and resilience can be integrated with historic preservation. Applicable ideas for meeting the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards while addressing the impacts of climate change.
- Describe the standard process for analyzing a historic building and the importance of a holistic preservation approach beginning with research, analyses, and reports – like Historic Structures Reports and Historic Context Statements – as tools to guide projects and improve community.
- Explain the regulatory approvals process for the reuse of historic buildings, how the reuse of historic buildings streamlines and compresses planning approvals and how the state historic building code can be utilized for building approvals.
