POSTPONED UNTIL SPRING 2019
The Holland Civic Center Place is the new vision for the Holland Civic Center, which has been a vibrant community, athletics and event center for the City of Holland, Michigan for over 50 years.
This tour will focus on the community engagement process, conceptual ideas, architectural and engineering strategies, and the construction process to explain how the existing building was transformed from a traditional, inward-focused arena into an outward-focused and welcoming place.
Features of the recently completed project include a new transparent lobby space seen as a “community living room,” an indoor farmers market and expanded flexible event spaces that now support a broader range of community, athletic and event functions.
1. Identify methods for soliciting project input and feedback across a range of stakeholder groups, including public charrettes, to ensure the program addresses the needs of a diverse community.
2. Describe challenges and successes associated with providing a completely new identity and experience with the renovation and expansion, while at the same time leveraging much of the existing building to be good stewards of resources.
3. Illustrate the use of new and existing materials in combination with each other to create a hospitality feel for events, and yet remain approachable and comfortable for everyday use in a way that is durable and maintainable by city staff.
4. Investigate how a project evolves from being disconnected from the surrounding urban and lakefront context to a place that now extends the vibrant pedestrian experience from Downtown Holland to the east one step closer to the Lake Macatawa waterfront to the west.
This program is ALA and AIA approved for 2.0 LUs / HSW.
