In this one-hour program, you will learn the key to sustainable building lies in long-life, adaptable, low-energy design. We will discuss how resources are best conserved if the service life of a building is prolonged, and how using precast concrete conserves energy and resources, both during and after construction.

Learning Objectives:
1. Learn how to design more environmentally friendly buildings.
2. Review how precast/prestressed concrete can contribute to buildings with longer service life and better indoor air quality.
3. Discuss the advantages of designing buildings using natural, renewable, and locally available resources.
4. Analyze how precast/prestressed concrete may qualify for LEED certification.

Presenter: Michael A. Johnson, P.E. is the Executive Director of PCI of Illinois & Wisconsin. Mike has more than 14 years of experience working in the precast/prestressed concrete industry. Mike's precast experience includes prestressed bridge beams, soundwall, retaining wall systems, double tee beams, and precast building systems.  He worked as a research engineer at the Illinois Center for Transportation, part of the University of Illinois Department of Civil Engineering, where he worked on transportation and pavement research projects.
 
Mike holds a bachelor’s degree in general engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a master’s degree in civil engineering from the U of I, specializing in construction materials.
