Low-Carbon and Ultra-High Performance Concrete

Conference Schedule

"Are You Ready for Low-Carbon Concrete & Ultra-High Performance Concrete?"
Speaker: Dr. Charles Nmai, PE, M.ASCE, FACI
Earn 1.0 LU/HSW (Approved by ALA and AIA)
Fall Signature Conference, Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023

Description:
The course is a discussion of sustainability and regulatory/market-driven low-carbon concrete initiatives that are being implemented or proposed in the concrete industry, including Portland Limestone Cement (PLC). The speaker will provide insight and answer questions to help manage expectations/mindset about the potential effects of PLC concrete and other low-carbon concrete options in everyday concrete construction. Architects will be introduced to and discuss the use of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) in architectural precast concrete applications, including facades and wall panels.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss Portland-limestone cement (PLC) and its potential impact when used in typical concrete applications such as flatwork.
  2. Compare current low-carbon concrete options that can be specified to meet EPD requirements for concrete projects.
  3. Communicate differences between life-cycle assessment (LCA) and eco-efficiency analysis (EEA).
  4. Describe and apply ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) in architectural precast concrete applications.
