This course will review the steps in assessing and approving a historic property that will receive historic tax credits for its restoration or rehabilitation. This includes: -An overview of the secretary of the interior standards for preservation. -An overview of how to assess a historic property in terms of its eligibility to successfully achieve historic tax credits. -Details on the historic tax credit process and other requirements -Examples of projects (various sizes and scales) where the methodologies are applied.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand what the secretary of the interior standards for historic preservation are, when they were formed, and why they are important.
- Understand the difference between state funded historic tax credits, federally funded historic tax credits and other special historic tax credits that are in use in Illinois and elsewhere.
- Learn techniques and methodologies to approach a restoration project in a historic building and assess whether or not it is a good candidate to apply for the historic tax credits.
- Understand how to work through the historic tax credit process and paperwork as published by state, historic preservation office, and the national park service.
